Blocking E-Mails

Why can't I block the irritating pointless e-mails I keep getting. It either says you can't block your own e-mail or an invalid e-mail? thanks.

Spammers put fake addresses into the 'return address' field in emails, either making something up or simply copying the address of the person whom they're sending the email to. It's that address which 'blocking' filters look at, so they won't work if the address is clearly invalid (e.g. because it doesn't contain the @ symbol) or if it matches the recipient's own address.
