The phrase "in this day and age" comes to mind.

It was not uncommon in the early post WW2 years to see a child standing alone outside a pub, whilst mum and dad went in for a "swift one" ...it happened to me most Sunday evenings.

However "in this day and age" it would be tempting fate and would be deprecated.
Oh dear - I would say "it's nice to see a child wearing reins" but not under these circumstances :-(
at least the child was 's
what ? ^^^^^^ at least the child was ' secure ' !!!!!!!!
Reminds me of that little toddler in China that was tied up whilst the father went to work.
^^^Apart from the fact that he went to work and was not engaging in gambling.
The office workers were so appalled that they decided to photograph the event and scurry the vitally important evidence of this horrendous crime to the press!
2-3 mins eh? So that probably means less.

I doubt there is evidence she put a bet on.
It's only because it's outside a bookies. Blown way out of proportion.
I love that headline off to the right:

Married Man City star Kolo Toure tricked student into affair by claiming to be a car salesman

What a killer pick-up line...

Anyway, to the case in hand... is this because kids aren't allowed into bookies' shops? If so, perhaps it's a policy that needs reviewing. However, my mum would occasionally tell me to wait outside a shop if it looked crowded, and I can't say it warped me for life. Nice of the people over the road to keep an eye on it all, less nice to rush off to the Mirror with their story.

Ok you can look at it 2 ways.

1. It isnt crime of the century, more so thoughtless and most of us wouldnt do it.
2. Potentially what could have happened in those 2 mins if the child broke free or was kidnapped (you may say far fetched but why put a child at any avoidable risk?)
We don't know why she went in the there.
obviously if I'd been there and in a mood for practical joking, I would have taken the child and tied up a toad in its place. That'd teach her.

JNO even though yout intentions would be as a practical joke and even though her actions are questionable - could you be accused of kidnap (hypothetically speaking I am sure)
Quite shocking for 2012! At the age of four or five, My nan used to send me into pubs in town when granddad went missing for a day or two. I'd continue pub to pub until I got news or found him (usually passed out in the corner, somewhere). Also, there were pubs, and still are, with playgrounds in the garden. So when the adults were enjoying a nice sherry in the warm, we'd be outside in the cold nursing our coca-cola, making the most of our freedom, usually under the careful eye of some 9 year old placed out to check on us.

I remember prams being left outside of shops whilst the parents went shopping. My mum made it all the way home, feeling like she'd forgotten something at the shop. Potatoes? No. Bread? No. 'Balls, i've forgotten the baby' as she legged it all the way back to the shop!

Don't get me wrong, i think this story is awful, poor kid, very demeaning. But if my experiences were all over the news now, my family would have been deemed incompetent, which is far from the truth!
I suppose it beats sticking your kid to the window by their lips using the principle of suction :)
jd: yes, probably. And the toad family wouldn't be best pleased with me either.
the mother could have been an employee collecting her wages or checking the rota and under 18s aren't allowed in bookies (think it's 18)
what are the odds of her winning "mum of the year"?
Bit of a storm in a teacup, she didn't tie the child up, she passed the reigns leash under the door and had hold of it I gather, so she may have literally just popped within eye shot for a second.Still shame to ruin a good lynch mob.
