......and her question about 'sudden death'

when playing the extra time of 30 minutes, why not stop the match as soon as a goal is scored - thereby declaring a 1 - 0 winning team? -- why keep playing?

(of course play the full 30 if there is no goal scored)

Gosh, I've inspired a thread (and it's about a sport), who'd have thought it?

I think that is called 'golden goal' excel.
While that might work in some cases, such a rule would be unfair in those parts of the world where extreme weather can occur.

If the extra time was played with strong winds and driving rain coming from one end of the pitch, the team with the wind behind them would have a clear advantage if the games was to be stopped when they scored after a few minutes. Playing the full 30 minutes ensures that each team has to play half the match with the wind behind them and the other half into the wind.
The Golden Goal was abolished in,I think 2002, as it was decided it tended to make teams play more defensively so you still ended up with penalties.Go to the link and scroll down to association football.

Ignore that link it sends you to another thread

Is that ^^ a home goal?

I think that is a bit over rationalised Buenchico. There is no reason that the conditions switch round at half time. The fact is simply that these are the rules the representatives of the international FA's have agreed on.
As Paddywak says, it leads to a 30 minute non event.
Golden Goal sounded like a great idea but it didn't really catch on for the reasons described. But it undeniably worked on occasions of course.

I'd like to bring back replays :-)
