I was just looking at this from a different angle - how many clubs in non-league have a bigger population than Burnley. For example, Burton, just promoted to the league have a bigger population, Eastbourne Borough are in a bigger town, whilst Kettering is about the same size (2001 census). Lower down the leagues, Slough Town in the Southern League South and West have a population of 119K, much bigger, Hornchurch in the Ryman is much bigger (130k in 1961). Sutton Coldfield in the Midlands league is bigger, 105K whilst Eastwood Town who topped the Unibond Premier is about the same size!
I always thought it was Glossop (Glossop North End)who were the smallest town to have a top flight club.
Btw Dudley is the biggest town in England not to have a league club ( we are either West Brom or Dingles) It is also the biggest town in the world without a railway station.
:-)
Histon have a population of 4450!
MightyWBA, I thought that Wakefield was the biggest town not to have a football league team
