He wanted to be paid the same as Lampard to stay at Chelsea, by all accounts. Comrade Abramovich was not prepared to bow to his wage demands. Cole, then realising he had priced himself out of the market, signed for the first half-decent offer that came his way. Chelsea finish up with a similar player (Benayoun) on half the wages.

I thought he would have gone to either Arsenal, Spurs or West Ham as he had stated that he didnt want to up and move and was very happy where he lives in the South East? I would have loved to see him come to Arsenal but we would never pay the money that he wants, pity, he is a very gifted player. I think Liverpool have done well to get him.
