Someone told Houllier to get bent, and he only went and paid £18m (rising to £24m) for the player.

The most idiotic sum of money paid for an average player, ever? Or has there been worse?

I live in the North-East and all we have heard from Bent is how wonderful the Club,Fans and Area is,saying he wanted to finish his career up here,so no matter what anyone says he is purely motivated by GREED,nothing more nothing less, anything he says about Villa and Birmingham should be taken with a pinch of salt!! You are probably right about him being an average Player,Sunderland have definitely got the best deal.
Just about as bad: Bobby Robson at Newcastle paying £8.5 million for Hugo Vianna(Who? you might ask)
Alex Ferguson: £28 million for Veron,I think that is probably the worst.
Question Author
Oh yes, Veron - forgotten about him. And you're right, Vianna who?
there have been worse ones, look at some of man citys overspends!
bibblebub, Hugo Vianna, Portuguese Under 21 international who was going to be a World Superstar according to Robson.
Bent hasnt been the same player since he handed in a transfer request last August. Always best to get rid of players like that. Money, Money,Money
Bent has gone to the right club .... Villa only ever buy average strikers.

Sunderland must be laughing all the way to the bank.
only trouble is we need a replacement as two of our strikers are injured. We only have Gyan so if anything happens to him we have nobody
Never worry Alex ... I'm sure an enquiry is already being made about bringing Owen to Sunderland ... probably for around £8m lol
I hope you are joking Captain Kirk!!!! I would not be too surprised if Bruce and Quinn started drawing up a list when Bent first put in a transfer request, I know I would have done
Andriy Shevchenko - £30 million,
Wayne Rooney is looking well dodgy too.
Michael Owen £17mill to Newcastle. Darren Bent scores 1 goal for England and decides he wants £30g a week more, greed pure and simple.
I hope he's a failure at Villa, but I suspect this will turn out to be an inspired signing.
According to his interview Villa match his ambitions!!! they cant be very high then can they?
^^^ lol
steve daley at the time for the bitters.
Such short memories, folks? How about that numptie of a Brazilian, Robinho, who Mark Hughes splashed out £32.5M for to take him to Man City?

A total waste of rations.
Question Author
Man City crops up again, other clubs see them coming.
