The cue ball was in the 'D' and I was given a free ball. I selected the yellow ball and missed the middle pocket (theyre very difficult on our table). thecue ball finished up behind the brown snookering my opponent. He said it was a four point foul because I am not allowed to snooker from a free ball. I said it was not a foul because I did not snooker him behind the yellow ball. Please tell us who is right.

You're right - you cannot deliberately snooker someone from a free ball by creeping up to the ball you have selected, but if the cue ball lands behind another ball, that is not a foul.....
you are right the rules say you can not snooker your opponent behind the ball you play in this case that would have been the yellow
Quite corect......you can snooker behind ANY ball from a free ball as long as it is not the one that you nominate.

Now ....if the yellow ball had gone off the sides of the middle pocket and ricocheted back to the D and snookered you opponent BEHIND the yellow...however fortuitous, it would then be a foul.
