Would'nt it be good to have a tyre that lasts the whole race? Therefore straightfoward race from flag to flag?

Yes, it would. Perhaps when you have a spare moment you could invent one.

A few seasons back there was but the complaint was that it was not all-out racing as it was all about looking after the tyre.
I think the current tyre rule adds drama.

Tyre tactics make it interesting. I also miss refuelling during races, although I appreciate the safety reasons for stopping that.
