Mr Alba angles, but doesn't fly fish. I'll try to ask him if he has an opinion though.

You can't beat the taste of freshly caught fish. :-)

All I get now is Trout I'm bl00dy sick of it ha ha. I now say "Dont bring any home pet I can't fit it in the freezer".. (I won't go to heaven)
LOL, I know the feeling, my dad and a brother keen keen fly-fishermen, on a holuiday once, we had it for what seemed like every blooming breakfast.
Found this, but no user recommendations. (Put your order in for Salmon!)

alba thank you for the link.. Now I would love a freezer full of salmon :)
Been fly (dry) fishing since about age 7 when taught by my father here in the western U.S. I've tried many of the newer carbon fiber rods, but have always returned to my favorite Collier 9 foot, four section Tonkin Cane, split bamboo, made in 1907. Nothing matches the action of the old rod, although it does take alot of care to keep it in top condition. I match it with a Holloway reel, made in 1910 with 3 pound test double tapered line and leader. We tend to tie our own flies here (helps to pass the long winters) but our best all around is the Royal Coachman on a number 8 or 10 hook. The split bamboo is excellent for fishing shallow riffles in late September, where our Rainbow Trout tend to hang out.

Not much help on the Daiwa... but I see their about $200.00 (US) or so this listing on eBay may interest you : http://www.ebay.com/itm/EX-DISPLAY-DAIWA-WILDERNESS-XT-FLY-10-8-3PC-Model-No-WXTF1008-3-FLY-ROD-/330828039641?pt=UK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL&hash=item4d06e345d9

There appears to be about 3 to 6 models of the Daiwa...

Clanad thank you for your reply and link, I'll show it all to Mr A, I'm sure he will learn something from it. Not many people will be useing a rod and reel as old as yours, you must be proud of them and the work you put in to look after them.
asked Mr Alba, although he's not an owner of a Diawa Wilderness rod, he says that in that price range they are all pretty much alike and you get what you pay for.
Tight Lines :-)
Arwyn,
What sort of fly fishing does Mr. A intend to use this for ?
A 10 foot, 8 weight rod is a rather unusual combination.
daiwa make very reliable mid-price kit, my salmon and trout rods have both been going for twenty years, the knack is getting the reel balanced to the rod and you

clanad's advice should be utterly disregarded because he is a jammy git and I do not have a drop of envy in my entire being
Question Author
alba Thanks for that I'll pass on that information :)

nescio He said "distance casting lures and teams of flies" and he is "open to suggestions" Thanks for replying.

Question Author
humber lol. clanard must have looked ofter his kit.
I have passed your message on thank you. He just sold a rod because after one go he decided it was wrong (maybe it caught nothing lol)
I just realised - the 10ft #8 was in the link provided by Clanad.
Nine to ten foot, #7 or #8 should be OK for distance casting and lure work.
I am used to lightweight oufits (#3 or #4) on smallish rivers, but my workhorse rod is a Daiwa (Whisker Kevlar Tournament Osprey River Trout Special - 9', #4), 24 years old and still going strong. Love it !
do you know how mr a learnt to flycast arwyn and is he fishing from the bank or a boat?
I am a fly fisherman - I have no experience of Daiwa fly rods but I have several Daiwa coarse rods and have no complaints about them.
I can recommend Greys fly rods (Hardy's budget line) as both my son and I use them extensively.
Question Author
nescio mr A said "Thanks for you help and advice, I fish large still water".

Nescio I say "I wish he would keep the same bl00dy rod for 25 years, I'v lost count of many sea rods got bought and sold lol"
Question Author
humber he had lessons and from a bank.

Shoota thanks I have passed that on, he has had grey's sea rods they are made not far from where we live.
shoota, I think most kit is about the same really, I was just asking because I wouldn't get rid it after one unsuccessful outing
Question Author
humber, nor would I, but it is packed and sold on ebay (£50 loss) and ready to post tomorrow. So he better buy the correct one this time :)
