Until the British colonised that part of the world, India didn't exist as a single nation. Each of the regions were self-governing, with their own conventions about things like names (which might be interlinked with both religion and caste).

Many of the regional differences exist today (although generic names have come to replace many caste-based names), so the way that an Indian player uses his name depends largely upon which part of the country he comes from.

Thank you Buenchico. Haven't I seen you in the crossword section?
If you've seen me in the Crossword section, Farrnorth, I was probably taking an incorrect guess at something!
(I've posted over 27,000 answers on this site but I'm still rubbish in the Q&P section!)

Hi Chris
My mistake.
I still don't understand why the name on the shirt should not be the same as the name on the score card regardless of the somewhat complicated Indian naming conventions.

Anyway here's another question for you.
In tennis when the player calls for a trainer. Is it his or her personal trainer who comes or does the venue provide them. If the latter, how many of them are on site?

Comment on the ODI. England left Trott out and of course won!

Sorry for the delay in replying. (I was in France yesterday).

Each player has their own support team available to them. Andy Murray, for example, would probably call upon his physio (Andy Ireland). If he wasn't immediately available then his fitness trainer (Jez Green) or his 'conditioning coach' (Matt Little) could probably assist him. If all else failed, his performance coach (Barry Cowan) might actually have to do some work!
