Kompany - Man City player. What's his name?
15 Answers
Everyone knows he's called Vincent, right? Wrong! Since City won the title, I've only heard reference to him as Vanson. So does that mean he's called Vincent Vanson? I can reveal that my name is Vincent, but no-one has ever called me Vanson. What is it with these sports people? They only use names that no-one else would.

It's for Vincent himself to say. It would be no surprise if a francophone, if kompany is one, pronounced it what sounds like 'vanmson' to us, because 'vin' and 'cent', themselves two French words, are not pronounced 'vinn' and 'Sent' but more nasally than the English would do, and he might choose to see his name as two syllables similarly pronounced. That some other francophone chooses to pronounce his name as the English would, is not a rule for Kompany.
By the way, how does N'Gog pronounce his name? Fans call him 'eN' Gog. The BBC called hime 'engoh'. A South African friend said it should 'Un [click] go' because it was a name in a language, like Xhosa, which has clicks in it !
