The only one i can think of who would do that is Ian Botham. Not sure, though.
could have been Dexter, Gower, quite a few especially in the cavalier old days (they only have goji berries now).

Douglas Jardine was well-known for his love of Champagne and for ensuring that there was always a supply of it available.
An amusing illustration of Jardine taking up the suggestion of champagne for his bowlers. By gad, Sir, but surely they were only Players, not Gentlemen ? I suppose that is part of the message; the Gentlemen would have it anyway. The Players were only given it in this exceptional circumstance.

thanks to every body who has taken the time to have a look and or send an answer
i did find a reference to gower but took it to be a one off occasion i was also thinking along the lines of the the early days of test cricket test andhave done a google search on every england test cricket captain including the womens.
as buenchico and fred mention jardine and champagne are mentioned togther but was he himself a bowler and shared in drinking that bottle
the wording of used to rather drank makes me think it means some captain
regular lunchtime tipple .
