ah, I remember the opening ceremony from Albertville 1992, which was a sort of drug-induced dr seuss fantasy - each country was led by a woman in a plastic snow globe and wearing a curved sign with the country's name. and as they marched, the announcers read rhyming couplets of the most cheesy - stuff like “From the land down under with the funky mammalia! Let’s all welcome the team from Australia!”
well, perhaps not quite like that, but you get the idea....

It wasn't part of the original plan. It was a scheduling issue.
In other words, they didn't have enough time on the Slopestyle piste to fit in all the events.
So, they had to slip in a qualification heat before the Games begin. It wasn't originally planned that way.
And, as we've seen, it happens at the Summer Games, too.
