i have seen horses who have not survived the distance, go down like a pack of cards, and generally you know that they won't be able to race again, the chances are they are put down, if anyone has ever been to a point to point meet, that is tough for rider and horse, i still like going, and its not to try and win loads of money, but for the atmosphere and a grand day out.

there is a lot of incentive for horses to jump, not least a crop, which jockeys use to move them on, they are indeed bred to race, it doesn't mean they all enjoy it, thoroughbreds can be skittish animals, highly strung, if you watch them in a parade ring you wonder if you could read their thoughts, whether they want to be there. Of course if we had no racing, then no horses, at least not for that purpose. We never really treat any animal well, they are used for our pleasure, food, or sometime companionship, and in times of war in the past we used and killed them through overwork, warfare, even leaving many of them in France when WW1 was over to be consumed by the allied soldiers,
I am afraid you are p***ing against the wind in trying persuade a mind change from ratter. Like all those who are dead set against jump racing, he has an opinion and is entitled to stick to it - and we should respect his opinion. The same way he should respect ours! My problem is that 'atalanta' asked for a likely winner of the National, not someone's personal take on the cruelty of the race. Perhaps ratter should have opened up a new thread to discuss, in a gentlemanly/womanly way - as we do on AB - the pros and cons of steeplechasing.
