Football is a tedious game with an unusually high preponderance of cheats among its participants. International football is notorious for its low quality (teams formed of players brought together for the odd match here and there are unlikely to perform very well). The World Cup is the pinnacle of all this tedium, dishonesty and mediocrity. The format of the competition is ridiculous. Leaving aside the two years of qualifying, the finals as currently organised take 63 matches to find a winner from 32 teams - more than twice as many as necessary. Then of course there is the inexplicably unnecessary "third place play off". Because of the low quality spectators and TV viewers may be fortunate to see one or two half decent encounters amongst all this.
It should come as no surprise that the selection of venue for the 2022 competition (or indeed any of the others) is under scrutiny. The big money which is incomprehensively generated by the competition is bound to attract corruption. It will be interesting to hear fans' comments when this nonsense thankfully comes to an end. Most will probably say that they were not that impressed by it all.
So should it be scrapped. Well if it gives a few folk a bit of pleasure I suppose not. But the saturation coverage on TV is unnecessary. The BBC should confine it to one of their minority channels such as BBC4 or, better still, CBBC.
