The first 2 pieces of advice i was given when i first began gambling were; 'Never gamble more than you can afford to lose' and, 'if you can find a trainer or jockey who have a 20%+ strike rate - latch on'. What your figures show, Talbot, is that AP regularly had a 20% + strike rate throughout his 20 years at the top. What they do not show, is how many of those winners were long odds-on (which would obviously affect the profit margin) and just how many times did he ride doubles and trebles (not to mention the odd 4-timer). Not even his most ardent supporter would have backed every nag he sat on and many, like me, would have done him in doubles and (especially in small fields) trebles. And on numerous occasions, they would have been rewarded. He was very definitely my pal:-)
