On radio the thought was that they should declare slightly before lunch to have a few overs at the openers, the idea being that this means that Australia's batsmen might have to effectively start twice either side of lunch, and the first start being not long enough really to get a feel for conditions. Also gives the bowlers a chance to have a longer spell while still being fresh, because you can get a couple of overs in early and then a 40 minutes break to be fresh again.
It didn't work today, but can do on occasion.
