If a boxer's record/earnings/standing suffers due to them being a decent person, all the more shame on the "sport" IMO.

" - usually it is not, this is a case where it should have been stopped, Eubank senior meant well but probably made it more difficult for the ref to stop the fight when he may well have done so in different circumstances. Clearly he did not want to be accused of pandering to the Eubanks. Anyway as DB said it's easier with 20/20 hindsight.

Certainly, the ability to do so is there, but once a contender is 'disposed of', as it were - and Eubank was the contender - the still-reigning champion is rarely favourably disposed to such a rematch! The contender would probably be stuck at the end of a slew of others all wanting a crack at the champ.

It was brutal.

Although I despise boxing I was brought watching it. I messaged my cousin, an ex boxer, and he said it should have been stopped rounds before it was.

Each round they were wiping blood off him.

It's not Eubanks fault...Blackwells team should have threw the towel in.

I watched it, Blackwell was bolding his own, I saw no reason to stop the fight until his eye swelled. A lot of blood but that was from a nose bleed. I have seen boxers go far beyond this without the fight being stopped. They were both informed adults and knew the risks and either could have stopped any time. I think the ref. did a good job! Its a brutal sport.

Nick Blackwell can NEVER be allowed to box again, this has ended his career and probably his useful life. All in the name of more cash for the promoters.
The fight was not stopped earlier for ONE reason only, IT WOULD HAVE COST ADVERTISING REVENUE ! The advert slots had all been booked and paid for, if they had stopped the fight early they would have to refund the fees from the un-shown but booked adverts!! It really is down to that!!

Eddie I disagree, he was holding his own, there was no reason to stop the fight earlier.

I remember a 'Big' fight back in the 1980's it had been advertised for weeks and was £15 extra on your TV bill to watch. The fight started and one fighter threw a single punch that knocked the other man out cold, the fight lasted just under 10 seconds ! There was uproar people demanded a refund of their TV payment, it was reported that it cost $millions in lost advertising revenue.

TTT stop being dramatic, he was fighting till the end, there was nothing to suggest there was any thing more wrong with him apart from a swollen eye a bloody nose and fatigue, quite normal for that stage of a fight.

According to the judges there was only 2 points between them at the end, not that I agree with those scores! Eubank clearly had the upper hand all the way through.

Different from Eubank v Watson.

As Ratter as said Nick Blackwell although out boxed still had his wits about him so had a chance (he won the 8th imo) many fights have been won from this position despite being well behind on points.

Michael Watson on the other hand had no clue where he was. His corner had to all but force his gumshield in then the ref had to drag him to the centre of the ring. The ref in the Eubank/Watson fight got it very wrong but the ref last night would not know without hindsight that Blackwell was in serious trouble.

Maybe he just realised his son was winning and wanted the fight stopped while he was ahead, Nick Blackwell has a reputation of coming back strong in the later rounds.

Also, the ref. could not have stopped the fight on the recommendation of a contestants Father, that would have not looked good, imagine the outcry of match fixing Etc.

The ref. stopped the fight at the appropriate time based on what he was seeing in the ring.
