While watching the Six Nations match yesterday, France's pack was described as weighing 'nearly a ton'. Despite scouring various reports, I'm unable to find the definitive answer for the actual total body weight of the starting eight so can someone oblige me with a figure please?

Simply click on each of the relevant names here, look in the right-hand panel of each page for their weights and then add the figures together:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France_national_rugby_union_team#Current_squad
if the average weight was approx 18 stone thats 114.305 kg which comes to 914kg, not far short of a ton.

Dave.
heavy but they tire and don't have the depth on their bench - some big backs too but they need more explosive acceleration - other than that famous Frenchman, Monsieur Scott Spedd-ing.
Ahead of the first matches of the 2017 Six Nations the starting teams were listed thus:

Country ........ Pack ........ Backs
France .......... 936 kg ..... 651 kg
England ........ 921 kg ..... 639 kg
Ireland ......... 915 kg ..... 665 kg
Wales ........... 909 kg .... 682 kg
Scotland ...... 905 kg ..... 674 kg
Italy ............ 878 kg ..... 640 kg

Of course this may not reflect the line up for the second matches, nor what the packs would weigh as the games progressed and substitutions having been made.

Thank you to every one who has taken the trouble to post an answer. As I was falling asleep last night, the thought occurred to me that, the first time that the packs engaged, there would be an indication of the weight of each pack on the screen and so I'm heading for the iPlayer!

Dave's answer was very close! At the first scrum, the weight of the France pack was 919 kg - that converts to 2,026 lbs and is merely 214 lbs short of a ton.
wouldn't want to have to feed them for a week would you?
>>> France's pack was described as weighing 'nearly a ton'

Surely that should have been 'nearly a tonne', shouldn't it? (i.e.you shouldn't need to convert to pounds)
Question Author
Buenchico, that's a very good observation and I must admit that I hadn't thought about that. To me a ton is 2,240 lbs and, for that reason, I'm probably giving my age away because I'm not used to metric measurements!
