The present Mrs Hughes is a fanatical (season ticket holding) Stoke supporter, and like many, is pleased that MH has been dismissed.

I know little about football, but who is likely to be a good replacement and keep Stoke in the Premiership?

That is news and hard to suggest a replacement at this time, Togo might have few Idea's or Stokemaverick although I haven't noticed him about in a while.

tonyav - I have heard Mr O'Neil is in the frame, and my wonderful wife would welcome him to the Bet 365.

Arksided - I think it was news to Mr Hughes as well! He was talking about having the backing of the board, and looking to buy a defender in the transfer window, but at eight last night, when they got back from the match, he was told he was going.

I also understand that the Deputy Chairman did the telling - MH has always claimed to have the backing and support of Chairman Peter Coates - seems he misjudged things.
Am I the only one who read this question thinking that Mrs Hughes was Mark Hughes's wife?
Behave hoppy.. lol
Martin O’Neill is currently manager of the Northern Ireland national team. They narrowly missed qualifying for this years World Cup in Rissia. So he is not going to be very busy with the national team for a while.

So he might be available. He is a good manager, and it would be good to have him back in the Premier League. I’d like Stoke to stay up and I would like West Ham to drop.

Mrs Hughes is Mark Hughes' wife - just not the same Mrs Hughes to whom I am referring.
Martin O'Neill is a busted flush and has been for years. He was good with Leicester and with Villa when they were splashing the cash.
And I could have managed Celtic to the Scottish title :-)
He's been a disaster with the ROI.
Hands off the real M O'Neill by the way Stoke, tho I don't think Michael would touch it with a bargepole. Please.

I think you've got your O'Neills mixed up.

isn't that the archetypal poisoned chalice for any manager? the full backing of his board/CEO?
Perfect for the vacant Wales job. Never won anything as a Manager, and neither have Wales....

It does appear to be so.

Even my non-football memory recalls the times when Doug Ellis was Chairman at Villa, and his public 'support' for a manager usually meant that a P45 as being typed up as he spoke!
Thank God Hughes is gone. I have been saying for the last 3 years that he is uninspiring and unimaginative in all he says and does. He gasps for breath when giving TV interviews and must be the same when talking with the players and staff. I used to joke that he should stay out of the dressing room at half time, because every time we went in leading at half time we would go on to be rubbish in the second half and lose. Martin O'Neill and his enforcer Keane would do for me, or Ronald Koeman. Gary Rowlett does not have the Prem. experience to save our bacon. Hughes took us from being a side with the best defensive stats, to the one with the worst in 3 years. O'Neill for me........make us at least a side to be feared instead of a pushover.
I seem to recall Stoke were being touted for relegation at the start of the season as their squad had been weakened.
They started off ok but it has gradually gone downhill.
Hope whoever gets the job is able to save Stoke from the drop. They have done quite well in previous years and don't deserve to be punished for one bad season. Unfortunately for Hughes, despite taking the team to 9th for 3 consecutive seasons, then a 13th last year, his team have grossly underperformed and the buck stops with him. Just pleased to see our gaffer not on the list of probables - which makes a refreshing change as he usually is. Obviously very early days, but oddschecker have O'Neill (6/4 - 9/4), Gary Rowett (7/4 - 2/1) and Bilic (4/1) as the 3 leading contenders.

Ohhh yes, andy. If deadly Doug gave his public support to a Villa manager then that manager usually had around a week to find a new job.
Theresa May keep them up...
