Golf - Do They Have Referees/umpires?

Was discussing this at work - nobody could ever remember seeing or hearing mention of a referee or umpire on a golf course.

Tournament golf has rules officials on the course, nothing in club golf where golfers work out infrigements amongst themselves.

At my golf club we always have a referee accompanying the players during the finals of our knockout tournaments, to officiate if necessary.

That must be a posh club Twix. At the last club I was a member of, you would have struggled to find any golfer with a good enough understanding of the rules.

There is a Professional Golf Referees Association and they operate at every major tournament.

At a professional tournament, there are a good number of officials walking round with the players. Scorers, record keepers, and rules officials. What with the local and national media it can be quite a busy fairway.
