Right Decision In Third Test?
Very tough on Sam Curran. I wouldn't have dropped him, would you?

As I see it, the selectors for any team (in any sport) will have a group of 'definite' players (whom they write onto the team sheet almost automaticall y) and a pool of 'additional' players (whom they use to fill the gaps). Stokes is currently a 'definite' player (along with Root, Anderson, etc) but both Woakes and Curran are within the pool of 'additional'...

I agree - I'd have assured Stokes he'd play in the 4th Test and played an unchanged side for this one.
Curran is young and doesn't need overwork, Woakes may not remain fit (he's a bit of a wonky donkey these days) and Broad is a bit fragile too - it would have been better to take a view on which of the three to leave out for the next game - but keep Curran's confidence high by playing him for this one.

Although Curran was named Man of the Match in the First Test, it's Woakes who's achieved that accolade the most recently (including dismissing Virat Kohli, which must count for a lot), so that would seem to just give him the edge over Curran.
Woakes has picked up the first three wickets today, so he seems to be doing OK so far!

(Memories. Very young VE - fifteeen - English Language O-Level: "Construct a sentence illustrating the difference in meaning of the verbs 'imply' and 'infer'". Didn't know then , but have never forgotten it since. Got a 55% when bare passes to today's "As" were were arithmetically ranked between 45% and 90%.
