Thanks to an accidental collision which could happen in any sport. Should we do something about the much more common accidents which happen on the roads every day?

I don't know anything about football, but a young Australian cricketer died a couple of years ago after a sickening blow to his head from a ball. I don't see that much has changed in that sport.

I hope Luke Shaw wasn't too badly hurt in this instance.

Luke Shaw did tweet that he was OK and feeling better, last night. He had an x-ray and they were keeping him in overnight for observation. The Commentators said it was a 'clash of heads', but Shaw leans in to head the ball clear, but doesn't see the Spanish winger, who came in off the touchline. The Spaniard tries to pull out of the challenge, and it puts Shaw's head and neck in an awkward position, and that's what causes the injury.

In the Phil Hughes (Cricket) situation, Helmet design has moved on, and more protection has been added to the area at the back of the neck, and behind the Ear, to prevent a repeat. I do feel though, that that was a one-off, as he looked away from the ball AND it didn't bounce as high as he expected.

The answer (In Football)? Well, you can't stop Footballers rom trying to clear or head the ball away from danger, and, just because you get a 'shout' from a team-mate, you can't be sure it isn't a member of the opposition, trying to get you to leave it so they can score instead. I think it has to be put down as an accident, an move on.

Since you raised the proposition that "something must be done", what do you suggest? How about stopping play as soon as the ball goes above shoulder height? What about Formula One style crash helmets? What about banning football altogether? It's all very well saying "something must be done" but nothing practical really can be done to prevent (incredibly rare) accidents of this sort.

excuse my ignorance, but do some players in rugby union wear head protection?

Piggynose, I always thought the hats that some rugby players wear are to protect their ears. They don't give much head protection.

Cloverjo is right. Skullcaps just stop Rugby players from getting Cauliflower Ears. You are right that Rugby players (In both codes) do wear them. They might be an alternative though - depends on outfield players wanting to wear them.
