Now that Novak Djokovic's participation in the tournament is no longer a possibility, the men's title will probably go to either Daniel Medvedev or Alexander Zverev - Nadal on his top form would be a danger, and i know he's just won down under but his injury and illness will surely take their toll if and when he comes up against the top players. The prices of the aforementioned players do not appeal to me (7/5 and 12/5) so i'm concentrating on the women's title for my early bets.
My idea of the winner is two-time Aussie Champ Naomi Osaka @ 6/1. She took almost a year out because of her well publicised mental problems and she wasn't too convincing in her opening match (just 51% first serve success and 28 unforced errors in her 6-3, 6-3 victory). Hopefully that was down to lack of match practice and, just as hopefully, she will improve as she progresses.
A viable e.w. shot is Paula Badosa of Spain - currently on court versus Australian Ajla Tomljanovic. Having won the Indian Wells tournament last year, she is currently ranked 6 in the world and should any of the big guns falter, she could be the one to benefit.

Kovinic is akin to a 'job-jockey' spice. 56% success rate but never been beyond 2nd round in a 'Slam'. She was the 4/1 outsider. Raducanu was 4/25 fav. Says everything really, imho.

As i said earlier in the thread, Spice, if i thought she stood any chance at all, i would have had a little e.w. on her @ 40s.
She needs to play in every available tournament to gain that all important experience. Because of her big win last year, even mediocre opponents will raise their game against her.

T'would appear that Miss Badosa ran out of steam getting this far. Beaten quite convincingly 2-0 by American Madison Keys (6-3, 6-1) :-((

Ash Barty just eased through 2-0.

The 10 o'clock match-up between Pablo Carreno-Busta and Matteo Berretini looks to be quite an interesting clash which could go to the wire. The Italian is the higher ranked of the two- 7th as opposed to 21st - (and is 4/9 fav to proceed) but he has had his injury problems through last season and into this one. He has had a couple of injury retirements and needed medical treatment during the final set of his 3-2 win in the last round.
The Spaniard has also had a five-setter at this tournament and has been ranked as high as World number 10 and if his opponent's fitness is in any doubt, he can take full advantage.

In one of the closest straight-sets victories i have seen in quite some time, Matteo Berretini booked his place in the next round 7-5, 7-6, 6-4, winning the points that mattered.

Not having much luck in this tournament:-(

The upcoming match between Gael Monfils (20) and Matteo Berrettini (7) sees the Italian as odds-on favourite but really could go either way. The Frenchman has yet to drop a set in this tournament while there is still a question mark over Berrettini's fitness.

Given that this will be Monfils' toughest test to date, i'm betting;

£5 win; Berrettini to win 3-1 @ 10/3

In the women's tournament, both Ash Barty and Madison Keys won in straight sets and will face each other in the next round.

When Gael Monfils won the third set to make it 2-1 to Berrettini, i thought my luck was in. However, the momentum he gained helped him win the 4th set too. The Italian prevailed 3-2 in the end.

Though Stefanos Tsitsipas is ranked a few places above his opponent, Jannik Sinner, i have a gut feeling that the Italian can extend his 10 match winning streak on the main tour.
