.........oh no it isn't! The usual gubbins in all the papers about how England are going to win The World Cup. They're in poor form, so I can't see why anyone would predict an England tournament win. As mentioned in a previous post, England are a good side. They will give anyone a good game. But they aint good enough. That's just the way it is......

I don't think we stand a chance in hell.
All our top leagues are full of foreign players and very few English (please don't asks for stats, just look at team sheets) so we don't have sufficient numbers playing at the highest level.
I'm prepared to be proved wrong but that's my long held view.

I'd love to be proved wrong, but i have to agree with 10C and derekpara. We ought to win our group (5 - 7 points?) but I honestly doubt we'll get further than the 1/4 Final. I'll obviously be willing them to do well, but, my expectations being as low as they are, i won't be too disappointed when they are eliminated.

Any decent side from the Premiership (or any other top domestic league) would give most international teams a good game. The top half dozen would paste them regularly. International football is second (or even third) rate. The players do not play together enough and football is a team game. You see occasional flashes of brilliance by individuals but that’s as good as it gets. Fans are fooled into believing they will see the best teams in the world. They won’t. They may see (some of) the world’s best players but they won’t see the world’s best teams. That’s why international football will always disappoint.

Most countries have the problem that the top club sides contain may foreign players. England has had this problem almost forever because of the ridiculous idea of forming four teams from one country. As long ago as 1961, when Spurs won the double, they used just 17 players throughout the season, though only eleven played in the majority of the matches. Of the other six, one played 14 matches, two played six times and the remaining three once each. Of the eleven core players, three were Scots, one Welsh and one from Northern Ireland. So even sixty years ago, almost half their team were “foreign” players.

At least all the England flags should be off the cars and out of the windows long before the final.

09:09 the judge is correct, these days any of the top European club sides would win the world cup if it was possible to enter. International football quality is far below that of the top club sides these days because basically the top club sides are someone's idea of a world 11. Imagine picking one team, your best idea of an 11 from all the national sides, well that's effectively what has happened in the top clubs.

I recall lots of folk in 1966 before it all started saying we were no good and had no chance of winning it. Then it CHANGED.

Having said that, I don't think we have the manager to do it this time, in spite of some very good players.

The heart of football, from Sunday morning kick abouts to England's International team is rooted in the same mindset - optimism, undiminished by reality and disappointment.

Add in the British bulldog attitude, and this is where we are, and the media reflects that approach.

We will never consider not winning, until we don't, Jo matter what realism suggests.
