Football contact is almost all around the feet and ankles, dozens of delicate bones and tissue not braced for impact, because impact is usually avoided.
That's why rugby players accept a degree of pain in well-defended areas of the body, and footballers are not ready for pain that is virtually always inversely proportional to the force of contact that caused it.

Sadly, they all taught R.U., probably specified on the curriculum. RL clubs abounded though and those interested very often joined them.
Space & playing fields were often not large enough in inner-city schools to teach proper cricket, but i remember at one, very cramped Sec-mod in Halifax, the games staff somehow managed to coach the basics.
