My ex partner is one of security there and he witnessed the tragic incident. My sincere thoughts and condolences to his family. RIP 😢

No one fell over.

If this was football he would have been sent of for serious foul play. Now if Adam Johnson haden't died I have to wonder if the other player would have been sent off. That would have made it deliberate. Not deliberately trying to kill but deliberately trying to hurt his opponent.

If contact like this was allowed I wouldn't play ice hockey unless I was wearing full chainmail.

remember this one? it resulted in an international incident and eventually a settlement out of court....

On this one that has happened here in the UK, I think that the authorities should determine whether it was accidental or assault and let them take due action with the police or not.

17.06 tragic accident? But as someone said it is a contact sport, and players do set out to hurt each other, but what I don't get is why was it necessary to make contact with the dead man's neck? Maybe its time to provide players with better protection?!

why was it necessary to make contact with the dead man's neck?

Don't know what you mean, Piggy.

Roy  - You are not making sense.

Ice hockey players barge into each other, they don't slash each other's faces with their blades!

This was an accident, I have no idea why you want to make it something other than what it clearly was.

Got wrong end of stick! Blame the Tenerife sun!! Just reread the story! It seems I allowed myself to believe he was struck by a hockey stick, which is wot normally happens! Contact with a blade, would only happen when the player is on his back on the ice. This would equate to an accident, surely ?

Have you seen the incident?

18.04 the plot thickens! Perhaps shadyxx could shed some light on what exactly happened!

Who the heck is shadyxx?

omg...you havent...

Don't watch that folks

two players collided and fell over; one's skate nicked the other's neck as they did so. Probably no good way of preventing this from happening

Jno - You are making a sensible observation, based on the fact that none of us saw what went on.

This was clearly an accident, an unavoidable accident under the circumstances.

I can't imagine what Roy is thinking with his assessment that it was something else.

it's a Guardian report; one of its journalists was there

Christian Bennett, a Guardian journalist who was at the match, said: “Two players blindsided each other, just bumped into each other.

“The Sheffield player clearly got knocked off his feet and his skate went up and slit [the other player’s] throat.
