What is the tape stuck on athletes legs?

We have been watching the athletics this week and thoroughly enjoying it. Does anyone know what the sticky tape is that the athletes have on their legs and what is it for? There are also some with what looks like paint on areas of their bodies...any ideas?

Sticky tape is for athletes carrying injuries to try to keep muscles in proper alignment to prevent further damage.
The paint mainly just seems to be just a bit of fun with athletes putting their countries flag on etc.
