In my opinion, sportsmen/women shouldn't get a knighthood for jsut winning a gold medal.

Now, if they did something like izzard and raised over £1m or persistently raised money for and did well in the london marathon, or something similar in their own discipline then perhaps. Or if they had a terrible accident and doctors said they'd never walk agin, then they go on to win a gold, then perhaps.

Gold medals should be treated with respect and honoured but i don't think that they are in the same league as charity workers and true heroes.

Discuss.

Since I dont agree with with the Honours List I dont think anyone deserves to be elevated above anyone else.I wouldnt defer to anyone who was given a Knighthood for scoring a goal neither would I be particularly delighted for anyone being 'honoured' for doing their job.Its outdated and TBH I think lesser of any individual Sportsperson in particular even accepting it.
I mean Dame Kelly Holmes Sir Steven Redgrave,Lord Coe - it was their choice to fulfill thier dream and on that note i'll slip away as im killing time before i get the bus and wont be around to discuss but good thread which i would have enjoyed :)

exactly, they're just doing their job.

What about if the charitable ones got an award, but not a fancy title? it would recognise their achievements, without placing them above people?

Isn't a gold medal and probably world records enough for these people?

I agree with Dris -- think the whole system of Honours for anything is a load of baloney.
