Manchester United Football Club is the most famous football club in the world. They are also one of the most successful with more than 18 league titles and a record 11 FA cups. The club has been associated with some of the most significant names in the sport’s history such as Bobby Charlton, George Best, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham.

The club was founded as Newton Heath LYR F.C. in 1878, the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. After being declared bankrupt in 1902 the club got new investment and on 26 April 1902, Manchester United officially came into existence.

They joined The Football League in 1892 and have played in the top division of English football since 1938, with the exception of the 1974–75 season. They were the first English club to win the European Cup, in 1968, and won a second as part of the Treble in 1999; they added a third Champions League title in 2008.

Alex Ferguson has been manager since 6 November 1986 and is the most successful manager in the club's history, having won 26 major honours.

The club crest is derived from that of the city of Manchester. The devil on the badge stems from the club's nickname "The Red Devils".
