I am currently using Mcafee which is due to expire next month, through someones incompetence they ended my subscription at the end of March snd I had to contact them to have it put back again I ended up getting a 'worm' when it was left unprotected so I won't be renewing my license with them

IMO most of the large names will be much of a muchness.
I use Kaspersky if that is any recommendation.

AVG sounds ok so pardon my ignorance please but what is meant by malwarebytes and search and destroy, is this Spybot?
Question Author
O_G Kaspersky, might look into that too
Microsoft Security Essentials and malwarebytes.
both free and easy to use
Question Author
where would I download this from S.A
This will get a lot of replies and recommendations, just like which make or model of car does anyone prefer.
I have used AVG free version for about nine years on W98, ME, XP and Vista on our family's PCs without problems and it regularly gets good reviews and recommendations in the computer magazines.
I have just got a new laptop with six months McAffee included. I don't like it and will ditch it in favour of AVG when the free trial expires and they ask for a share of my hard earned pension.
It seems intrusive, just as Kaspersky that I see of friends' PCs seems to be.
That said, it's my personal choice and I'm very careful about sites I visit and links I click on.
Other people have had different experiences and will shout in favour of their own personal preference.

Avast free was recommended to me.In conjunction with super-antispyware.
All from filehippo.com
Microsoft

malwarebytes (run when you need it or once a month)

http://www.techspot.c...tes-anti-malware.html
Malwarebytes and Search and Destroy tend to look for malware/adware/etc rather than viruses but seem to pick up trojans and things too. A straight virus checker may not pick up the annoying but non-critical infections.
As far as Microsoft Security Essentials, recommended on other pages because 'Microsoft should know how to protect their Operating System' is concerned, if they were so good at that, then they should have written their OSes without all the holes that allow the viruses to get in, in the first place.
Dont confuse "anti virus software" with "internet security software".

Your McAfee is probably a full internet security suite (it may be, you dont say if it is or not). If it is a full security suite then it will chekc for viruses, malware, and all sorts of other things.

If you ditch McAfee and replace it with JUST an anti virus product you are leaving yourself wide open. Most anti virus software ONLY looks for viruses (and maybe a little malware).

So make sure if you ditch McAfee you replace it with something like for like.
