I know Updates are important for the safe running and efficiency of our PC's, but it's the length of time it takes to downlod and install them which infuriates me.
I run Vista Basic and today there were 21 Updates to install which took 1hr and 20min which includes restarting the Computer as well.
Any one else think that Microsoft are taking the p*ss at times ? duh

You must have a good fast PC Postdog, every other update that I do other than Microsoft are downloaded quickly !
I haven't used Vista for many years, but I always had my updates setup to download and install when I was not likely to be using the PC. Sometimes 2 or 3 in the morning.

Try the help menu, task scheduling or update scheduling or just plain scheduling.

Old Salt
So you didn't install the optional updates then.

No, I don't think they are taking the pee, security updates have to be applied and they are normally to fix issues that have only recently been uncovered.

Ubuntu has far more updates than windows does.

Well I'm no expert but if you are running vista your PC shouldn't be too old or knackered, so I can't really understand the time taken.
It isn't a Microsoft issue redman, it sounds more like your PC or internet connection (or both). My updates this morning took about 10 minutes from start to finish, including reboot.

I have disabled my Automatic Update facility as I prefer to download Updates at a time which suits me otherwise Updates will start and slow down my PC when I need to do some work.
I do it on a daily basis.
Interesting about Ubuntu Chuck, not come across it myself.
I have just checked my Windows updates (for Windows 7 and Office) and they are 78Mb in size, which is quite large.

If it takes a long time it is probably because you internet is slow.

Why not set it going and then make a cup of tea, or go for a walk, or watch a TV program. It is very simple to plan for these things to be done while you do NOT need to use the computer.
I agree Redman, the last lot of downloads were massive. I had to take my laptop into work yesterday to synchronise with the server, and I couldn't go home until the download was finished, when I tried to close it down....

Hi VHG ! The 21 Updates were 64.0 Mb so they were quite large, but my Internet is usually quite fast around 8mb. Maybe I have other problems ?
At work I dutifully install all "important" updates and any others which sound as if they might be good. Sometimes it's quick, sometimes very, very slow.
At home I haven't installed updates for years ( XP.)
I have no more problems at home than at work.
MS sell most to business and and have to try to cover themselves against the accusation that they have neglected even the remotest possibilities of hacking.
If my software seems to work, then I see no reason to fix it. As for hacking, I can't believe anyone would think it worth hacking my home PC, even if I published my logon & password to the world!
Microsoft were certainly taking the you know what when they inflicted Vista on us
