Transferring documents from XP to Windows 7

I have transferred documents from my old computer (Windows XP) to my new laptop (Windows 7) but when I opened a document all I had were x*s and numbers. What can I do to solve this. Also attempted to print a map with google directions and had a blank page where map should have been, and more assorted letters and numbers. Any advice greatfully received.
