when I switch on windows fails to load... do the 'repair restore thing and it starts up then when I switch off it loads updates which cause the problem to recur... as it reinstalls the update that is causing the problem... I feel lke putting it back in the box...taking it to PC world and asking for my money back...

and as for office 2010 that gets half way through a document and stops responding

Difficult to tell what the problem is with so little information. However, if you revert the machine to a previous restore point Windows is going to continue to try to download and install any updates which were issued after that restore point.

It could be almost anything. Perhaps the machine contains a faulty piece of hardware for which Windows Update is trying to download and install a more recent driver.

How long have you had the machine? If it's still under warranty, I'd certainly take it back, though you got it from PC World so I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you...

only had it a couple of weeks. I suppose its a case of giving then a chance to sort it but if they can't I will just brace myself to do battle... my own fault I went for a pretty all in one because it was half price .. still I've beaten PC world before

Thank you
Good luck!
Click on Start button in the search bar type Troubleshoot ,when that opens click on troubleshooting at the top and open it. When it is open scroll down to Fix Problems with Windows Update and click on that. When it opens click to repair and it will check and repair any corrupt updates which should cure your problem. You should be then able to install SP1 which will stabilise your computer.

I've practically given up with Windows 7. When it stopped working on my netbook I bought a better laptop with faster processor and loads of RAM and 64 bit home premium - meant to be a "fast" setup!.
Then I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook.
Guess which is the faster now?
And I use them for the same things - with Libre Office, Chrome browser, GIMPshop etc.
