I've never done a backup so don't know where to start. Can I put it onto an external hard drive?

The best backup is a disk image. This saves the current state of everything and allows the computer to be completely restored to exactly how it was when the image was taken.

Windows 7 has a facility to make a disk image but if you want the very best in image backup technology have a look at the products made by Acronis.

I've got an external hard drive. In fact I've got two, one that stays plugged into the computer (but turned off when not backing up), and a small one that I keep in another room.
Why don't you get a caddy external .. or at least a large pen/USB drive.
Use this .. http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm
