Hi, I have lent my daughter my new laptop cos she is converting some dusney stuff and this one of hers isn't doing it efficiently. So, last night this one was pefect, used it just on you tube and ab with wireless and smooth and easy as anything. This morning, can't open windows as normal, only is safe mode, tried to restore, won't do it, ran malwarebytes, no threats. It gets to where there are the 2 small profile icons, my daughters and guest, then whichever of the 2 I choose, the screen goes black with a white curserr arrow hovering but it doesn't do anything, left it ages whilst I mowed the lawns, came back, nothing. It's great in safe mode, online is fine, but no sound of course. Anyone any clues as to the problem? I don't have the windows disc, it is windows 7 something, she had an upgrade a month ago, the laptop is an acer 5315. Thanks in advance!

windows 7 ultimate this laptop is using, I've just checked the audio troubleshooter and it says one or more of the audio devices is not working, but isn't that just because I am in safemode?

It is working really well in safemode and the font size is excellent! But no sound, can I get sound and stay in safe mode?
That happened to my laptop a couple of months ago. Had to use it in safe mode, but had no sound. In the end the laptop 'died' completely and had to be sent away for repair.
Safe Mode is not for staying in. It's for sorting the problem and getting back to normal.

Suspicion lies with a driver problem since Safe Mode is basically normal minus any drivers that are deemed 'luxury'.

Can you restore to a date earlier than yesterday ? May sort out the problem.

I downloaded 23 windows updates this morning and it's since then it's gone doolali tap,. I've tried restoring it but it won't do it.
Downloading updates on top was a long shot.

If the restore failed then probably need to wait for the real experts to get here. Me, I just dabble a bit, but sometimes hit a winner.

You could try uninstalling all the stuff installed to do the converting (unless that was already there).
