I just had my ancient PC upgraded by a pal from the boozer. The computer was a cheap end-of-line model that I got from PC World back in 2003. This pal of mine stuck a new motherboard in it with a bee's knees processor and oodles of RAM with a hard drive the size of a house. It was working fine round at his drum but when I got it home it wouldn't boot up properly. Turned out it didn't like one of the bits of RAM so I took it out and it now works perfect. Sorry, I'm no techie, the RAM it didn't like was the big one with flashing lights on it. I'm saving that for my xmas tree now in December. I would put it on ebay but don't know how to describe it.
