If using windows 7 right click on the desk top screen then select view and select the size you want.

Depends on which version of windows and why they are large. assuming it's just the icons are large and everything else is OK....if it's windows 7 (and vista I think) click on an empty part of the desktop then hold down CTRL and roll you mouse wheel to change the size, if it's XP it's a little more involved.

Sorry. I should have told you all the OS. It's Vista and I've just done what Chuck advised and it worked.
