Internet connection

I have just connected an xp laptop by Belkin to wireless. The wireless is working fine, signal strength is excellent, but I just cannot connect to the internet. Both IE and BT/Yahoo flash on but for seconds only. I have managed to download Google but I cannot use it as such. Would the browser is corrupt? Any help would be gratefully received.

I'd be willing to bet that you've got the wireless key wrong.

XP will look like it's connected to a wireless network fine if the key is entered incorrectly but the connection won't work.

Trish .. have you also tried a direct ethernet cable connection at all (if the router has a socket)?

Hi – this is an older earlier xp Acer laptop computer of mine which, in the past has always worked ok. I use Belkin to get the Acer connected to wireless. In recent time I replaced my old HP desktop with a new windows 7 HP desktop. The replaced HP I am now using with BT wireless which works perfectly ok. I am now attempting to use the same wireless connection with the Acer. However, the Acer when connected by wireless does not give me the option to enter the BT wireless details. The Acer is not used as my main computer so I do not have my Trend security on it, only microsoft. I have tried disabling the microsoft firewall.

Will now try the direct ethernet cable connection and will come back! Thank you all for your suggestions. Trish.

Hi again – did the ethernet cable connection test but no luck in connecting with IE or ISP (BT) which both flashed on and then off! Therefore, assume the fault lies in the Acer laptop. Will work on that now. Thank you all. Trish.

Hi Methyl – Yes, the Belkin Wireless is G for desk or notebook. This is the second Belkin I have purchased because the first Belkin I purchased way back was an N150 and failed to work as it appeared to be slightly bent, caused I think by ejecting not quite straight on – if you know what I mean.

System Tools Manager states Belkin F6D4050 Enhanced Wireless USB Adapter – and works fine – however, WAN Miniport (IP) has a yellow exclamation mark on it! It is an older Acer I purchased a few years back so it certainly doesn't have wireless or bluetooth. The LAN connection is excellent. I am desperately trying to find out the fault on the computer now! One error message that did come up was quote The Ordinal 650 could not be located in the dyn.link.library, i.e iertutil.dll. Unquote. I managed to download this dll file on a memory stick and have stuck it in the programme file? You may have guessed I'm not technical! I hate being beaten! Thanks Methyl.

That .dll won't do any good without it being in right place (which could be one of may locations .. P Files is not likely to be one of them) AND registered to Windows.
Better start with the yellow entry in Network connections in Device Manager.
That is networking driver probably corrupted and/or missing.
Have you any driver disc for the Belkin card?

I think you should follow below to check ALL duff entries in Device Manager and restart .. and let the card reinstall.
To show all duff entries in Dev Manager, you need to be able to correctly show ALL old stuff. ....

Firstly do this exactly ... copy and paste line into EV box ..
Start, right-click My Computer, and select Properties.
In the System Properties dialog box, select the Advancedtab and click the Environment Variables button.
In the Environment Variables dialog box, locate the System Variables panel and click New.
In the New System Variable dialog box, type DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICESin the Variable Name text box and type 1in the Variable Value text box.
Click OK twice.
To view the non-present devices, go to Start, right-click My Computer, and select Manage.
Click Device Manager, pull down the View menu, and select Show Hidden Devices.

That's first stage. You can leave permanently like this. Close up when working ok. I expect you will see a rake of stuff appear.

Hi Albags – followed your instructions precisely, but when pulling down the View Menu – could not find Show Hidden Devices, so that was left off and I didn't get the rake of stuff appearing! Have tried many times reinstalling both the BT Total Broadband and the Belkin. I am connected to wireless at this very moment (on the Acer laptop of course) and the Internet still flashes on one second only and then off! Therefore I assume it must be something in the systems tools. Will delve further. Many thanks for your help Albags. Hi methyl – yes to all the questions in your first para. Second para – both IE & BT/Yahoo screens flash on and disappear immediately – no light bulbs (was that a joke?).

I get the BT/Yahoo screen up showing the three hubs I can connect to. Also shown is a picture of a computer connecting to a wireless icon connecting to an internet icon (all with yellow exclamation marks). Also a wireless signal stating connection is excellent … and then nothing! I'll keep on trying though. Many thanks methyl for your renewed efforts. Absolutely have to retire to bed now.
