how to change my screen settings

I came to switch my laptop on and the icons are bigger and sort of stretched.The font is also bigger.Have tried the screen resolution but I either get very large or very small font.It was fine when I last used it
Help please

Hold down Control key and scroll up and down with your mouse until the size is correct

That works and my fonts change but the screen is kind of stretched sideways eg:my Google Earth icon is oval not round.
My web pages usually fit the screen but now I have to move it side to side to read it.don`t know how this happened,when I had closed down it was as normal and when I next rebooted it was I have said.Most inconvenient!
