How does one stop a Mac Snow Leopard OSX 10 from making a huge booming sound when you switch it on?

Its meant to be a groovy thing but its just a stupid gimmick really. Even the Geeks on Apple's Community site had no idea and just waffled. Setting the sound on 'mute' does nothing at all, however just putting the Mac to 'sleep' is OK = no sound then, but its when its 'shut down' and you press the power button to start it up then it needs to tell you its awake. with 'BOOM'. Its quite mad. Thanks.
