Free alternative to winrar

As winrar is only available free for a 40 day trial, is there an alternative system I could download for free. I've looked on file hippo and am uncertain of the options. Primarily it's to transfer mobi files from disc to e reader.

I can recommend WinZip as a good alternative to WinRAR. I personally like WinRAR better but I cannot afford to buy such programs when there must be a lot of free archivers out there.
