about:blank

When I have finished on the interent, I close it down and within seconds, I get the 'hourglass' cursor and the last screen I was on reloads, then another tab opens automatically and another, and another.
I came off the internet earlier today and wnet the the shop for an hour - left the PC on.
When I came back I had about twenty of these new tabs open in various stages of loading all entitled 'about:blank'. they would not shut down by clicking the 'x' and I had to do it via windows task manager - took ages.
I have run a scan and according to that my machine is free of viruses and other threats.
Anyone got any ideas?
