I have lost one of the programmes off the list on the right click open with
is there a way to get it back on the list again (XP)
I tried to browse for it but it does not open that way , I can open the files(jpeg) by going in through the main programme but it was much more convenient to use right click from the folders

IIRC the "Open With" list comes from a directory full of shortcuts. If you can find it and add the required shortcut you should be back as you were.

Wonder how you lost one though.
Or I may be thinking of "send to" :-(

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\SendTo

thank you for the quick reply but I don,t understand the first answer
what is IIRC please ?
It's a common Internet abbreviation for "If I Recall Correctly". You were relying on my memory, which isn't my strongest feature.

As mentioned, I was thinking of "Send To" rather than "Open With". But it may be a solution anyway; or someone else may come along in a while who knows the right answer.
I have Win XP and if I right Click and get the OPEN WITH list of usable programs, it also says at the bottom of the program list "Choose Program" and lists all available remaining programs on the computer so that you can choose whichever program you want or need.
Presumably, if you then choose a program it will be added to the OPEN WITH list.

Wak, it does not let me choose any other even when I browse for the one that I want and try to , it just closes the window and goes back to the original list without adding it or opening the file.

Old-Geezer ,thank you
Have a look at the following:-

Other people seem to have the same problem as yourself and it would appear that something is blocking your entry into the registry so that the chosen program can be added to the existing list. Firewall? Anti virus?

Wak, I will try that link ,thank you

methyl, thank you I have just tried that but it does not work,I get the open with window to choose another but when I click the programme that I want it will not change it closes the window without putting the programme back into the list of options
Have a try at this, FF,
Go to START/ Run.
Enter "regedit" (without the ""), click OK.
Explorer opens.
Go to HKey- Current User/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/File Exts.
Follow the list which opens down to JPEG and open it by clicking the + sign.
This will list all the programs which will open JPEG files. Is your program there?
Below the JPEG folder is a JPG folder. Is your program in there?
If you can find your program listed in the JPG folder, then either convert the JPEG file to a JPG or try to add your program into the JPEG folder.
Remember!!! This is the Registry you are playing with so be very careful what you do.
Hope this helps.
Wak.

thank you Wak I have done all of that (carefully) and the programme is listed in the JPG list,
now can you please explain the difference between Jpeg and JPG , I don,t know how to change them , or can you tell me how to add the same programme to the lists for the Jpeg files as suggested
The difference is the usage of the platform (ie operating system). JPEG is the extension given by the Macintosh; and JPG is the extension used in Windows.
Find your image in Windows Explorer and rename it from ?Name?.jpeg
to ?Name?.jpg
Try renaming one image only for starters and see if it works.
It works OK on my comp.
See how you go.
