I can see all the photos when its plugged into the camera, so they must be there, but when I try to download them to a folder on my laptop, it says the card needs formatting. If I do this I assume it will wipe everything. Any ideas?

I would lock the card (there should be a small slider on the side of the card) so you dont accidently format it.

As you say, formating will delete all pictures.

If so, first of all right click on a clear area of your desk top and select New > Folder. Name this folder whatever you want (eg "August photos") then plug the card reader into a USB port on your computer, pop your CF card into the appropriate slot and you should see all the photos that are on your CF card. It's then a straightforward job to "Drag 'n' Drop" to the new folder.
