APK files - how to get them to work on a tablet

I have a brand new Android tablet with Jelly Bean installed.

I have downloaded some APK files from a Torrent site and have tried to install them on my tablet with the APK manager app which was alread on the tablet.

The APK files I have tried have not worked.

Any ideas, does the tablet need "cracking" or something??
