we have an old p/c and a new laptop, as the old machine keeps switching itself on and off, we think it's time to replace it.
Now here's the question, should we buy a new laptop or replace the tower (I think that's what it's called), we are both novices, so would appreciate any guidance.
Thanks for reading this, B.

Unless you are a hardcore gamer (and if you are, you wouldn't need to ask this question).... it really makes very little difference these days.

Personally, my main use computer is a laptop that I use connected to an external 23inch monitor at work to give dual monitors and I choose that over a desktop with two monitors.
OH. you'll probably get answers saying "you can't upgrade a laptop"... but realistically, not many people upgrade the main parts of a desktop these days, and by the time they decide it may need it then it's obsolete anyhow.

thank you both for your advice, very helpful, just one more question, the desktop has a large screen and speakers connected, can these be used on a laptop?
yes
For the screen... use it as dual screen, once you get used to having two monitors you'll never want to go back.

It's a personal choice thing. Persopally I don't care much for laptops but realise some need the ability to move about using it everywhere. And yes I add to my desktop as time goes by, replacing bits as needed.
If you are pleased with your laptop, then perhaps you don't need a duplicate PC anyway.

But if you do, then a new tower PC isn't going to cost a fortune these days, especially as you won't need a replacement monitor or keyboard.

I use my desktop most of the time. I bought a super new monitor for it last year, a 23 inch jobby from Tesco and now I find that I can watch TV on it as well, using the BBC iplayer, on this lovely new site I have just found :::

You can watch pretty much any channel you, LIVE, for free !
