My old monitor had a jack plug connected to a jack socket on the computer and I had no problem with sound. My new monitor has no jack socket that I can see so I've plugged in a pair of speakers to the same computer jack socket that I was using before but I can't get any sound. The speakers also have a USB connector which I have connected to my computer but I still can't get any sound.I've gone through all the ";sound" things and sliders are OK and it isn't set to ";mute"; My speakers are switched on and volume control is set correctly. I have recently formatted my hard drive and re-loaded Windows XP any help welcomed thank you

";I have recently formatted my hard drive and re-loaded Windows XP any help welcomed thank you" Have you installed the soundcard drivers (and all the other drivers, come to that)?
Just a thought, but is the power light on on the speakers? The USB connections is almost certainly to provide power. If the power light is not lit, try plugging into a different USB port. The ports on the front are often not wired for power.

Hi Rojash,You're probably correct but I've never had this problem in the last 15 years or so.
I have always loaded up my Microsoft operating disk and got sound.Where could the sound card drivers etc be hiding?

Hi Methyl,
The computer is a "small business" purchase...no specific make but powered by Asus,Intel etc. It came without an operating system as I've got a Windows XP pro disk which I loaded myself
Speakers are Ezcool model SPK 01 and I know they work because I used them to watch films when the sound from my old monitor was too quiet.
No sound plugged in or unplugged. The "on " lamp is lit up.
Under "sound/video/game" I have Audio codecs and Legacy audio drivers which come up as working OK.
Under "Other in the same window pane I have 4 in alarm I think.
Audio device=not installed
PC1 simple comms controller
SM bus controller and video controller.
These are highlighted in yellow.Could you point me in the direction as to what I should be downloading

Well they are all the drivers that you failed to install.
As methil says, you should have received a driver disk with the machine.
Difficult to tell you where to get the drivers as you've told us nothing about the machine.
You could try running PCWizard which should give you a breakdown of your hardware, then you can get the drivers from the manufacturers' sites.
