can only think to run a virus / malware scan, maybe other might have more of a clue
It's possibly something running on the PC in the background using resources.
Have a look in Task Manager to see what programs are running. If you have tried to start Firefox it may be still running even though it's not showing or there may be a virus scan running.
Could be any number of reasons. Those above are good things to check. Something is taking up resources leaving you little.

If it has suddenly occurred you may want to restore the system from an earlier date in the hope of removing whatever it is you've inadvertently started up.

Maybe it'll be faster if you boot into safe mode, where you can run scans for virus or other malware.

Or it could be you've too little memory maybe. Or too little hard disk space - have you saved something large recently ?
Is it just the Internet ? Just wondered if it could be your broadband connection. Although to take an age just to open IE/Firefox suggests otherwise. Try rebooting your router/modem anyway.
I think it bit more info is required for the AB Techies to identify your problem. What make of Computer; Operating System (Windows whatever); and the editions of Firefox and IE.

It might be a Broadband connection issue as suggested by O_G or an up-date is required of your friends Browsers.
