I'm fixing an old Acer laptop for my eight year old grandchild. I've inserted 'wireless' into it and I have downloaded BT Total Broadband, both working well. However, the computer informs me that I am 'off-line' – which isn't true, the wireless connection being 'excellent'. How can I rectify this problem?

What exactly is telling you this ? Different apps can be set to work offline even if the PC is connected.
I went through similar over the last week with a netbook - it was seeing the network but not actually connecting to it. I discovered I had been entering the network password incorrectly, as it's case-sensitive and I was just putting in lower case. That solved it straight away - might work for you?

Re my earlier post - now fixed! I have just reloaded Firefox having previously taken it out, now everything fine. As everyone says, IE is rubbish ......
IE edit menu has a 'work offline' option.
I agree trish. IE is far from what it should be. Firefox is far better.

Glad all is now ok.
